Butter to Biodiesel

Earlier this year we signed on to convert an 800 pound butter sculpture into biodiesel.  It's a long story.  Each year the Philadelphia Farm Show commissions a butter sculpture as a showpiece for the week long farm show.  In honor of Ben's 300th birthday, the theme for this year's sculpture was Ben Franklin and the Liberty Bell.

At the end of the show, this stuff is so rancid there's nothing to do but dispose of it.  But by converting that half ton of waste into biodiesel fuel, Fry-o-Diesel demonstrated that one man's trash is another man's treasure by creating a useful fuel out of something that would otherwise wind up in a landfill.

Our first attempts to characterize butter.  According to this centrifuged sample of a stick of butter, it's 7% water, 12% milk solids, and 81% grease.

And we've got butter - buckets and buckets of butter.
